Information
Cemetery inscriptions and burial records can provide a great deal of useful information for the genealogist or historian. Early settlers in Union County continued the tradition of marking the graves of deceased family members. In the nineteenth century, cemeteries often began informally on family farms, sometimes a settler allowed neighbors to be buried in the same place subsequently donating the land to the township for use as a cemetery. In other cases, cemeteries began in connection with a church. Some cemeteries still maintain a connection with a church while others have been transferred to the township for maintenance and use as a cemetery. In some cases, a cemetery which began on family farm was never used by more than one or two families and is still on private property. Family farm cemeteries are often the most difficult to find and have often disappeared through neglect and destruction.
Researchers will notice that nineteenth cemeteries often have meandering rows, splitting and merging, although graves generally face west. The planned and surveyed cemetery commonly thought of today began in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In Union County, cemetery monuments from the 1810s through the 1840s are usually slender and made of a brownish sandstone. From the late 1840s through the 1880s, cemetery monuments are usually made of white marble, often slender from the 1840s through the 1860s and frequently large towering monuments from the 1870s through 1880s. Beginning in the late 1880s, machine-cut granite stones came into common use. These vary in size, but the most common type lists the names of a husband and wife. Also, during the 1880s, ornate metal monuments appeared for a short time.
